Things I have enjoyed this last week.
Ali Abdaal’s interview with Professor Richard Wiseman which is a brilliant way to spend 1 hour and 21 minutes listening to the fascinating insights with such a distinguished writer, researcher, psychologist, magician etc
Finally got round to watching CNN’s travel show “Stanley Tucci - Searching for Italy”. Had no idea it was available on the BBC iPlayer and watched 4 episodes back to back. Kinda helps when you love Italy. Excellent camera work and presenting, but what I really like is the enjoyment of actually eating food and the history of how the food became what it is; almost like a history lesson. Food shows often bore me, but travel and food together is dynamite.
In honour of Italian food, had lunch on the weekend at Rudy’s Neapolitan pizza in Soho, which was as good as the Manchester versions. Mamma mia its good. Highly recommend. Fantastic portions, excellent pricing, great service and well…just amazing pizza.
On the topic of food, got round to trying the famous baklava ice-cream sandwich at Darlish in Covent Garden this weekend (before the pizza was consumed, naturally). The saffron, rose and pistachio ice cream was delicious.
Things I’m struggling with this week.
Energy. Lethargy. Struggling to pin down exactly where this is coming from but my target culprit is Covid. After thinking I was one of the ‘special ones’ who hadn’t caught it during the pandemic, I eventually succumbed two weeks ago. After recovering last week and feeling much better, I’m still experiencing bouts of fatigue and lack of energy, which when combined with lack of motivation, is a dangerous combination.
This has most clearly been seen with my total collapse in drive to get reading done for my final elective in my MBA. I know I will get the reading done for the workshop in early September, but I don’t like this feeling of laziness. Perhaps it is my body telling me something and I should listen to it. I’ve managed to increase my running again since the covid week when I clearly couldn’t, but coupled with the heat, lack of a break, and intense first 5 months of the year, maybe it is all building up. Even with consistent 7-8 hours of sleep per night, I’m rarely refreshed after sleeping.
Tastebuds. My taste has vanished over the last couple of days and that must surely be down to Covid. I don’t have the metallic effect that I’ve read about it but everything is just…bland. Everything has been dialled down when eating - the only thing getting through is chillies!
Money
Bank of England raised interest rates last week by 0.5%. Waiting to see what the industry will do. Considering locking some money away for 6 months but waiting for these interest rate rises to be passed on to the consumer before deciding.
